Lane Swimming Etiquette

The LCLC welcomes lane swimmers of all abilities. The following lane swim etiquette guidelines are to ensure the flow of lane swim remains welcoming to all users. Please refer to the aquatic schedule to determine when and the number of lanes available for fitness swims.

When swimming lengths, please follow this etiquette:

  • Choose a lane based on your swimming speed
  • We share lanes, expect to share with other swimmer of similar abilities
  • Enter a lane from either the shallow or deep end wall to indicate your intent to join a lane
  • If there are two swimmers sharing a lane, it is acceptable to swim side-by-side instead of in circles.
  • Circle Swim – stay to the right of the black line on the bottom, swim counterclockwise, up one side of the lane and down the other
  • A tap on the foot is an indication that someone wants to pass, allow the swimmer to pass when you reach the wall
  • Only swim butterfly if you have the lane to yourself
  • During lane swim, one double lane is set aside for swimmers who prefer not to use lane ropes. Please keep the lane clear
